Vessel Reclassification

Reclassification is carried out when there is a change in the vessel’s class, area of operation, intended use, operating conditions, ice class, equipment configuration, or requirements imposed by regulatory authorities. This type of work requires a comprehensive analysis of existing documentation, the vessel’s actual technical condition, and applicable RMRS requirements.

The process begins with a review of available materials: certificates, classification documents, drawings, calculations, specifications, equipment data, survey reports, maintenance and repair history, modernization records, and outstanding remarks from previous inspections. If documentation is incomplete or outdated, a list of missing materials required for RMRS consideration is defined.

Next, we perform an analysis of the requirements of the new class or modified operating conditions. The assessment covers hull structure, strength, stability, damage stability, freeboard, ship systems, machinery, electrical equipment, automation, fire safety, lifesaving appliances, navigation and communication systems, environmental compliance, and other areas affecting the feasibility of reclassification.

Based on the analysis, a list of non-compliances and required actions is prepared. These may include additional calculations, restoration of drawings, structural surveys, equipment replacement, hull reinforcement, system modifications, installation of additional safety equipment, updates to operational documentation, or development of a modernization project.

Where design modifications are required, we develop technical solutions and documentation for approval. At the same time, we take into account not only compliance with new requirements but also the practical feasibility of implementation on an existing vessel: accessibility of installation areas, condition of structures, routing possibilities for piping and cable systems, and the impact on weight, stability, and operational performance.

We support the entire interaction process with RMRS: preparing documentation packages, responding to comments, revising materials, and assisting the client in completing the procedure until the required approval is obtained.

For the shipowner, reclassification enables expanded operational capabilities, extension of the vessel’s trading area, confirmation of compliance with new regulations, or updating of outdated documentation. Early engineering assessment allows for a clear understanding of scope, technical risks, timelines, and preliminary cost estimates.
