
Vessel Modernization and
Conversion
Modernization and conversion are carried out when it is necessary to change the vessel’s function, replace obsolete equipment, improve reliability, enhance operational performance, comply with updated regulatory requirements, or adapt the vessel to specific client tasks.
Unlike newbuild design, these works are performed within an existing hull, with operating systems, limited space, and the vessel’s actual technical condition. Therefore, the initial stage involves a detailed analysis of available data: existing drawings, calculations, specifications, equipment records, survey reports, photographic documentation, actual onboard arrangement, and installation constraints.
Where required, we perform onboard measurements and verification of structural layouts, machinery arrangement, piping systems, cable routing, ventilation, access routes, and service areas. This ensures that the actual vessel configuration is taken into account, not only the available documentation.
Based on the collected data, a technical solution is developed. This may include replacement of main or auxiliary machinery, upgrading of the propulsion and power generation system, installation of new equipment, conversion of compartments, modification of cargo areas, hull reinforcement, or redesign of fire-fighting, bilge, ballast, ventilation, electrical power, automation, or communication systems.
For complex conversion projects, 3D modeling is applied. It allows verification of equipment layout within existing compartments, identification of interferences, assessment of dismantling and installation zones, definition of system routing, and preliminary coordination of the arrangement with the client and shipyard.
Based on the engineering development, we prepare project and production documentation, calculations, specifications, order lists, and materials for approval by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS). Where required, we also prepare test programs, acceptance documentation, and updates to operational manuals.
Modernization can be implemented in stages to minimize vessel downtime and align works with repair schedules. In such cases, documentation is developed with consideration of dismantling sequence, equipment delivery, fabrication of structures, installation works, and testing procedures.
For the client, modernization and conversion extend the vessel’s service life, improve its technical readiness, adapt it to new operational tasks, and ensure compliance with current regulatory standards. High-quality engineering preparation reduces the risk of unforeseen work at the shipyard and ensures a more controlled and predictable conversion process.
