
Inclining Experiment and
Ship Weighing
We carry out inclining experiments and ship weighing to determine the vessel’s actual weight characteristics, center of gravity position, and the data required for stability calculations. These operations are required for newbuild vessels, after modernization or conversion, following significant changes in equipment configuration, when restoring documentation, or whenever updated verification of the vessel’s actual condition is necessary.
At the initial stage, we analyze all available input data for the vessel: design and operational documentation, hull data, equipment lists, tank information, consumables, previously completed stability calculations, and records of modifications that may have affected displacement and center of gravity. This allows us to define the scope of work, prepare the methodology, and identify which parameters must be verified.
Prior to the inclining experiment, we verify the vessel’s readiness for testing. This includes assessment of hull condition, installed equipment status, tank filling levels, amount and distribution of variable loads, presence of loose items, mooring conditions, water depth alongside the quay, weather conditions, and absence of external influences that could affect measurement accuracy. Proper vessel preparation is one of the key conditions for obtaining reliable results.
We develop the inclining procedure, define the measurement program, determine the arrangement and mass of test weights, their movement scheme, required measuring instruments, and the sequence for recording data. Where required, the procedure is coordinated with relevant stakeholders and complies with RMRS requirements.
During the inclining test, we record weight movements, heel angles, instrument readings, vessel condition, tank liquid levels, weather conditions, and other parameters affecting the outcome. All data is documented in a structured format suitable for subsequent processing and verification of the vessel’s actual characteristics.
After completion of the test, we perform data processing and calculations. Actual displacement, center of gravity position, metacentric height, and other stability-related parameters are determined. Where necessary, the results are used to update stability calculations, stability information booklets, weight control data, and operational limitations.
Based on the results of the inclining experiment and weighing, we prepare a formal report package. This includes the test methodology, input data, test conditions, measurement results, calculation tables, conclusions, and recommendations. The documentation is prepared in a format suitable for submission to RMRS, subsequent surveys, updates to operational documentation, and technical decision-making regarding the vessel.
For the client, inclining and weighing provide verified factual data rather than theoretical estimates. This enables more accurate stability assessment, safe vessel operation, informed planning of modifications, compliance verification with RMRS requirements, and reduced risk of errors in future technical decisions.
